Located at the foot of Mt Mahdev this wildlife sanctuary is the perfect day trip to explore the rich flora and fauna of Kashmir. Take a shared sumo from Maisuma sumo stand (near Lal Chowk) which will take about half an hour and cost INR 30-40 or a rickshaw which would cost around INR 200-300. Upon entering the gates of Dachigam you must register with a permit on the right-hand side, so bring your passport. Then you are free to explore on foot or hire a bike (INR300 for the day), if you have an SLR with a monster lens

you may also be required to pay a small fee. All formalities aside bring a picnic and explore!

There is a small wildlife recovery center as you enter which was home to a huge Black Bear and a Leopard at the time of writing. You can bathe your feet in the cool silvery stream that runs through the middle of the park, wander through the massive forests, and take beautiful pictures of the surrounding mountains and mustard fields. Animals that can be spotted in Dachigam include the Kashmiri Stag (Hangul), Himalayan Black Bear, Himalayan Brown Bear, Himalayan Langur, the Himalayan Bull which is unique to Kashmir, and many other exotic species of birds and mammals.
